What is a Tunic Dress? I've heard of the word 'tunic' before when I took an Arts History course in college. When I moved here in France, I've heard it more often... and as it turns out, it's been in the fashion trends in the last 3 years.

First of all, what is a tunic? Tunics are loose-fitting shirts or garments that were worn during the ancient Rome (1). They sort of resemble a toga, but tunics have more couture as supposed to togas. A toga is more like a one piece garment wrapped around the body, whereas tunics have a body-shape cut.

Today, tunics have been reinvented to catch up with the latest trends in women's fashion. They still come in its typical loose-fitting form, but you'll see them more as a blouse or as a dress. Hence, a tunic dress is simply one of those classically inspired wardrobe with a kind of a retro twist in it. They're available in varying shapes such as the smock type (the baby-doll cut), or the more traditional bodice and skirt type with elastic or pull-string on the waist. Overall, tunic dresses are very comfortable, stylish and quite versatile.
