What is a Tunic Dress?

What is a Tunic Dress? I've heard of the word 'tunic' before when I took an Arts History course in college. When I moved here in France, I've heard it more often... and as it turns out, it's been in the fashion trends in the last 3 years.

First of all, what is a tunic? Tunics are loose-fitting shirts or garments that were worn during the ancient Rome (1). They sort of resemble a toga, but tunics have more couture as supposed to togas. A toga is more like a one piece garment wrapped around the body, whereas tunics have a body-shape cut.

Today, tunics have been reinvented to catch up with the latest trends in women's fashion. They still come in its typical loose-fitting form, but you'll see them more as a blouse or as a dress. Hence, a tunic dress is simply one of those classically inspired wardrobe with a kind of a retro twist in it. They're available in varying shapes such as the smock type (the baby-doll cut), or the more traditional bodice and skirt type with elastic or pull-string on the waist. Overall, tunic dresses are very comfortable, stylish and quite versatile.

  2. All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, “Oh, why can’t you remain like this for ever!” This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end.
